Apple didn’t unveil a new Mac Pro at its latest “High Energy Transport”-themed spring special event. The strongest device to use Apple Silicon right now is the Mac Studio with the M1 Ultra. In the latest issue of the memo, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said the Mac Pro update may not wait until Apple launches the M2 Extreme chip.
It is reported that the M1 Ultra is the strongest and last chip of the M1 series of chips. The Extreme, on top of the Ultra, will have a monster of 48 CPU cores and up to 128 GPU cores, roughly twice the resources provided by the M1 Ultra. That’s before taking into account the performance gains that come with new architectures and process nodes.
At present, the M1 chip is based on the A14 chip (iPhone 12 series), while the M2 chip will be based on the A15 or A16 chip, but it is not clear which chip will be based on, which may depend on TSMC’s production capacity and capacity.
The M1 Ultra is actually two M1 Max chips connected by a silicon insert, a design Apple calls UltraFusion. It is speculated that the M2 Ultra will have a similar design, while the M2 Extreme should be a composite of four M2 Max chips. Analysts expect Apple to launch a new Pro XDR display alongside the new Mac Pro. It will offer a 7K resolution (up from 6K on the current model) and will likely feature its own A-series chipset, powering features like center stage and Siri.
