Among the innovations introduced by Samsung with Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus and Galaxy S22 Ultra there is also support for a higher charging speed: the two smartphones, in fact, can be recharged up to 45 W while the owners of the younger brother will have to “Content” with a 25 W recharge.
The new 45W charging technology is supported through the Fast Charging 2.0 protocol while the “basic” version can count on the first generation of this protocol and both use the USB Power Delivery PPS specifications.
In practice, any USB Power Delivery PPS charger capable of delivering the required 45W of power will be able to charge Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus and Galaxy S22 Ultra at the maximum supported speed while an older charger from Samsung will not charge new models at full potential speed.
Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus and Ultra recharged with various devices
At this point many users may have the doubt whether to buy a new 45 W Samsung charger (not included in the sales package) to take advantage of the increased speed or to continue using an old model and the Android Authority staff has carried out some tests to allow them to make a more informed choice.
These are the results of these tests conducted with a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (the times reported are those necessary to get the smartphone to 100%):
- 45W USB Power Delivery PPS – 62 minutes
- 25W USB Power Delivery PPS – 69 minutes
- 18W USB Power Delivery – 91 minutes
- Qualcomm Quick Charge – 92 minutes
- Samsung Adaptive Fast Charge – 98 minutes
- Standard 5V USB – 135 minutes
Compared to the normal USB Power Delivery and Quick Charge standards, the new chargers offer a noticeable improvement in charging time (between 20 and 30 minutes depending on the power) and the improvement is even more evident when compared with the old standard. Samsung Adaptive Fast Charge and with USB 5V charging.
But if you compare it with the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra charger, that is USB Power Delivery PPS at 25 W, the improvement is of a few minutes and this probably does not justify the purchase of the new and more powerful one.
The following graph shows how the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is charged with the new 45 W charger and with the “old” 25 W charger and confirms that, although there is an improvement, it is not such as to revolutionize the user experience:
Those who already own the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 25W charger, in essence, may not have a great interest in buying the 45W one.
