Mac Studio has two versions, one version uses the M1 Max chip used in the 2021 MacBook Pro, and the other version uses Apple’s latest M1 Ultra chip, which connects the M1 Max chip to the MacBook Pro. Together, it operates as a single chip, using Apple’s original UltraFusion packaging architecture.
After yesterday’s press conference, the introduction page of Apple’s Mac Studio has been launched on the official website. The page shows that the Mac Studio of the M1 Ultra version is 0.9 kg heavier than the Mac Studio of the M1 Max version, which makes people curious about the reason behind it. Apple explained to The Verge today that the difference in weight turns out to be because the two versions have different cooling systems.
According to Apple, the M1 Ultra version uses a copper cooling module, while the M1 Max version uses an aluminum heat sink. Copper is heavier than aluminum, and the former has a larger cooling module, so the weight is different, and both versions have the same 370W power supply.
The M1 Ultra differs in performance from the M1 Max, with a 20-core CPU and up to 64-core GPU, the M1 Ultra has twice the computing power of the M1 Max. Despite the high-powered chips, Apple says the Mac Studio runs silently and is constructed by using a double-sided blower to pull air in through airflow channels on the bottom and push it out through perforations in the back of the case.
