The Apple Studio Display causes all kinds of discussions. This is not only due to the height adjustability for an additional charge of 460 euros, but of course, it is also about technical things. The design looks really good to me and the processing will in all likelihood be accordingly.
The Apple Studio Display is a 27″ 5K Retina display (68.29 cm diagonal) with 5120 x 2880 pixels at 218 ppi, with which you will certainly not have any HiDPI problems. In addition, there is also a webcam that also supports Center Stage, six loudspeakers and a ring of three microphones round off the whole thing.
Should users get the idea of wanting to connect a Windows PC to the Apple Studio Display, this will of course also work. However, Apple has already confirmed that there will be restrictions. Not surprisingly, the PC requires a graphics card with compatible Thunderbolt or USB-C ports and resolution support.
The webcam should also work as an ordinary USB webcam, according to Apple in a statement, Center Stage, i.e. tracking the user, is only possible with a Mac. Other features enabled by the A13 chip, such as spatial audio and “Hey Siri”, are also not available on Windows computers.
For from 1,749 euros, it is a visually chic and certainly good display, but it is also an expensive one. As a loose comparison: Monitors in the LG UltraFine 4K or 5K class are usually cheaper but do not have the “smart” functions. If you can deduct such a monitor for tax purposes, you might have less trouble spending more on the design. For many, the eye also works.
