OnePlus is now officially part of Oppo and OxygenOS uses the ColorOS code base. OxygenOS and ColorOS are user interfaces for Android. And as a small note: In China, OnePlus now only uses ColorOS.
OxygenOS should remain independent
We were about to take the step towards a uniform OS, but there was probably feedback from the community that didn’t welcome it. As such, OnePlus confirmed this week at MWC 2022 that OxygenOS and ColorOS will remain independent.
OxygenOS 13 (read Android 13) is also said to bring “exclusive customization features” that ColorOS doesn’t have. However, this announcement only applies to the global markets, in China OnePlus will continue with Oppo’s ColorOS.
OnePlus and Oppo have converged even further over the last few months and I suspect that the same will happen with the software. Maybe there will be some exclusive features and other icons, but I can understand that they want to combine them – after all, software development is very expensive.
Let’s see what awaits us in the second half of the year. There is a new ultra flagship with the new OS in the room. So it won’t be a uniform OS, but I’m sure that an interesting announcement will follow.
By the way, the OnePlus 10 Pro is not yet affected, it will (probably) come to Europe at the end of the month and will then still run with OxygenOS 12.1.
