Google entered the headphone market in 2017 with the Pixel Buds and has since expanded this segment with a new and cheaper A version.
But that was just the beginning because Google is said to have acquired several startups in the last 15 months, according to Protocol, all of which deal with audio. Google reportedly spent millions of dollars on four companies.
Synaptics and Dysonics started in December 2020 and RevX and Tempow were added in 2021. Sometimes Google bought everything, sometimes just the knowledge and sometimes the technologies. However, Protocol also speculates that Google is also interested in new audio patents.
After all, Google lost to Sonos in court. But the amount and the number of acquisitions do indicate that Google has big plans for the audio division of the Pixel series. Maybe we’ll see new models in the future, like the first over-ear headphones from Google.
