The camera of the current and future Pixel cell phones is not only visually striking. The bar on the back, known internationally as the “camera bar”, is really big. It also offers plenty of space for the future, when camera sensors and the rest of the camera hardware should become even larger. According to a well-known colleague and insider, Google is said to have thought of exactly that during the development.
Google wanted to lay a foundation so that Pixel phones wouldn’t have to be redesigned after a generation or two. There will be slight adjustments with the Pixel 7, but the cornerstone of the Pixel 6 design remains the same for this year. And possibly also with the Pixel 8 or Pixel 7a.
The expected design of the Pixel 7 Pro will not differ much from the Pixel 6 Pro:
And the design of this year’s generation ( Pixel 6a ) is already arriving in the middle class. Google could then install a new camera in the Pixel 7a that would take up more space without having to revise the camera design again. Clever and very thoughtful.
Google has thought about the future of Pixel phones
The camera bar should already be big enough today to be able to offer enough space for the next developments in the future. Google can rely on LiDAR and other technologies in future devices without fundamentally redesigning their own devices. This also means that Google phones will likely look somewhat the same for years to come.
Wanna know something fun? The camera bar was designed to be that large specifically so they could keep that design language for a few years and be able to fit new camera tech in there. They can fit newer, better, bigger sensors and LiDAR without a redesign. https://t.co/itLgvHw4QI

When it comes to the future, one primarily sees advantages in this for colleagues. Not just on the technology side. A recognizable design would be important for the Pixel series to build the brand. We know from companies like Apple that this isn’t a bad idea.
Not to forget that the Nexus 6P has looked similar before. A great thing for fans, this little homage.
