Meta’s social VR platform Horizon has reached 300,000 monthly active users, a 10-fold increase in 3 months. Meta spokesman Joe Osborne confirmed the statistic, saying it includes users of Horizon Worlds and Horizon Venues, the latter separate apps for attending live events in VR, using the same avatars and basic mechanism. That figure doesn’t include Horizon Workrooms, a VR meeting experience that relies on an invitation system.
Meta’s most high-profile bet right now is Horizon Worlds, a social VR platform for the Quest headset. Horizon Worlds is in private beta for creators to test out their world-building tools before launching in December. Similar to how gaming platforms Roblox or Microsoft’s Minecraft work, Horizon Worlds lets people build custom environments in which to hang out and play games as legless avatars.
Meta announced this week that it has so far built 10,000 unique worlds in Horizon Worlds, and its private Facebook group of creators now has more than 20,000 members. Given that Horizon Worlds has only been in widespread use for a few months, it’s too early to tell if the platform will continue to grow rapidly, or if it will retain users long-term. Social products have always had more MAUs than DAUs, and the holiday season’s boost in Quest headset sales certainly helped drive interest in Horizon.
