Netflix, 2K and Take-Two Interactive have announced that they will collaborate on a live-action version of Bioshock. While this news is sure to excite fans of the series, there is no further news yet. There’s no release date yet, and Variety reports that the film also hasn’t revealed a director or cast.
The Netflix website simply mentions that the film is based on the Bioshock series, so there could be Rapture, the underwater city of Sanssouci, a representative location in Bioshock 1 and Bioshock 2, as well as Bioshock. : Infinite, the characters and scenes of Columbia, the city in the sky.
Netflix shared a media image on Twitter showing the representative NPC “Little Sister” and the impressive enemy “Big Daddy” from the game’s first two games, so it looks like these iconic Bioshock Characters will appear in some way.
Take-Two’s 2K is also working on a “new game” for the Bioshock game, though in a December 2019 game announcement, 2K said it would be in development “over the next few years.” Considering the continued development of the Bioshock IP and the movies that will be released, it seems like 2K and Take-Two want to make Bioshock a larger franchise.
Universal Studios had the rights to make a Bioshock movie at one point, and Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski had worked on the project, but it was eventually canceled.
