Krafton Inc, creator of the popular PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) online game, this week announced a partnership with Naver Z aimed at developing a new NFT project with an admittedly vague focus on Web 3.0 and the metaverse.
Naver Z is a South Korean company that some may recognize as their parent company Naver is involved in the development of the Line messaging app and WebToons online comic publishing platform, while Naver is behind the virtual space platform Zepeto, which Line has been experimenting with for several years. Blockchain and cryptocurrencies.
In creating this NFT metaspace platform, Krafton will leverage its experience and related technologies from creating online games such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds to develop a user-generated content (UGC) creation tool, while leveraging Unreal Engine to build a high-quality virtual world,” the official announcement explained. “Naver Z will leverage its experience designing and running Zepeto to manage the metadata service and its surrounding community and social services.”
NFTs are a relatively new technology that uses blockchain technology to guarantee ownership of digital assets. For example, if a game uses NFTs to secure 100 in-game items, it is technically impossible for someone to hack into the game to obtain such items, as the creation of items and their ownership is done through the blockchain database verified.
This extra security is one of the main reasons why so many companies are transitioning to blockchain technology. Microsoft has been exploring blockchain for several years with numerous projects and collaborations, and just last month, Opera announced a new web browser with a focus on Web 3.0 and cryptocurrencies.
