Samsung will soon have a better update guarantee for top models than Google offers for Pixel phones today. It can’t stay like this. Samsung had already presented the Pixel 6 and presented a more than decent update guarantee.
The South Korean manufacturer guarantees new security updates for many of the Galaxy phones for more than four years. New Android versions are guaranteed for three years. Google added a fifth year of security updates, but the Pixel 6 wasn’t more
Now, of all people, Samsung is the first manufacturer of Android smartphones to even want to guarantee new Android updates for four years. The ugly duckling of update policy today is a white swan. Samsung trumps Google again so the Mountain View group has to make some adjustments. At the latest with the Pixel 7, but preferably a little earlier.
Own processor: Tensor as an opportunity for Google
Google continues to hold all the aces for the Pixel 6 devices. These are the first devices with a Tensor processor, which means that Google is no longer dependent on Qualcomm for product maintenance. A good reason to extend the update guarantee for the Pixel 6 models even later. Just for another year until 2025 so as not to look so bad against Samsung.
In any case, there is criticism everywhere on the Internet. That was already there when it became clear that Google was only improving its guarantee for pixel smartphones for security updates. The critical voices are certainly no less or quieter now. Always with the ulterior motive that Apple is doing something for the entire industry and has been doing so for years.
