According to Nintendo’s sales figures released last week, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe Edition has surpassed Collection! Animal Crossing became the top-selling game on the Switch platform, and if you add the sales of the original Wii U version of Mario Kart 8, the game has sold more than 50 million copies.
The data in Nintendo’s financial report shows that the Switch version of Mario Kart 8: Deluxe Edition has sold 43.35 million units. If the WiiU original Mario Kart 8 sold 8.46 million units, then Mario Kart 8 sold 43.35 million units. It has reached 51.81 million copies. This achievement is simply unimaginable for the earliest games that were exclusively on a single game platform.
Mario Kart 8 first landed on the Wii U platform in May 2014, and later on the Switch in April 2017. Compared with the original version, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe Edition for Switch has improved the game screen, added tracks and characters, added automatic driving assistance functions for child players, and supports local wireless connections for up to 8 people.
While Mario Kart 8 is a hit, it could also make the Switch the only Nintendo console that doesn’t have a serious new entry in the series.
