Mario Kart 8 is a good game that was first released for the Nintendo Wii U almost 8 (!) years ago. The Wii U was the biggest flop in Nintendo’s history and as a result sales of the racing game were rather modest.
Mario Kart remains a bestseller
However, in 2017 a deluxe version (Mario Kart 8 with all DLCs) was released for the Nintendo Switch and the Switch has now become the most successful console ever (by Nintendo). And Mario Kart continues to drive it.
A look at the latest sales figures released today shows that demand is not letting up. It’s the first Switch game to hit 40 million (!) units. So in the last quarter, over 4.6 million people decided they need Mario Kart 8 for the Switch.
Mario Kart 9 is said to be in the planning stage, but with this incredible success (it’s likely to be the most successful single-platform game), Nintendo can take all the time in the world. Which I, as a player from the very beginning (Wii U version), now find a pity, because slowly but surely new content would be really nice.
Here’s a look at the most successful Switch games so far. If you want to take a look at the development compared to the last quarter, then have a look here. By the way, only one thing has changed in the rankings: Splatoon 2 dropped out of the top 10 (was in 9th place) and was replaced by Pokémon.
That’s also a phenomenon, if Arceus is just as successful, then there are four Pokémon games in the top 10 of the Switch in about three months.
