Samsung has patented an advanced dual-folding Galaxy smartphone that has an integrated stylus holder to accommodate the S Pen. In mid-2021, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 were released as the brand’s third-generation foldable phones.
The Korean manufacturer has been working on completely new designs for quite some time. For example, think of a slider-style smartphone with a scrolling display. The company is also working on a dual-folding phone with two hinges and three display sections. Samsung Display already showed off prototypes of both types of phones last year.
Bi-fold phones can be folded into a zigzag shape. This means that one section can be folded forward and one display section can be folded back. Samsung Electronics has filed patents for this type of device several times over the years. Late last year, LetsGoDigital reported on this Samsung smartphone with reverse wireless charging technology.
This time around, the company filed new filings that focus entirely on the S Pen. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the brand’s first foldable phone to support Samsung’s stylus. Now that the company is able to get the S Pen to work on a flexible screen, it can be expected that the brand’s future foldable models will also feature stylus support for increased productivity and creativity. This is especially true for dual-folding phones, which have a larger display area.
On July 23, 2021, Samsung Electronics filed a patent with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO). The 66-page document was published today (January 27, 2022), titled “Foldable electronics consisting of a stylus.” Numerous documents reveal a Galaxy phone that folds into a Z shape. When folded, this makes the phone as big as a regular phone, and when unfolded, you get an extra-large and expansive display at your disposal, which makes it a true tablet.
The right display part in the unfolded state constitutes the front display of the phone when it is folded. On the back of this display section, a cutout is made for the S Pen. In the middle part, there is also a cut surface. That way, you can fold the phone completely and the S Pen will be sandwiched in between. The stylus is also magnetically attached, similar to the Galaxy Tab series.
Since the S Pen is attached magnetically, it won’t fall out when you unfold the phone. This also ensures that the S Pen is automatically positioned correctly when charging, for which a charging coil is built-in. The current S Pen Fold does not require charging, while the S Pen Pro does. So the patented Galaxy phone will also be compatible with the extra advanced S Pen Pro, giving you all the Bluetooth functionality including remote control.
Users can also take out the S Pen through the bottom, taking out the S Pen from the bottom doesn’t mean you have to unfold the phone first, you can take it out or put it back in when the phone is folded. Patent images show that the Galaxy Dual Fold phone has three cameras on the back, the lower of which is a periscope zoom lens.
The camera can be used both in a folded state and when the phone is (partially) unfolded. In addition, an under-screen selfie camera will be used. The document also shows that the Galaxy Dual Fold has a built-in dual battery.
