The purpose of Google TV has always been to aggregate all the content in the user’s availability in one place. To do this, however, it needs collaborations with the different brands that offer streaming services. Two years ago, in 2020, Netflix rejected the integration into the Big G platform, but now the words of an executive, in addition to rekindling hopes for the future, give us an idea of the future features related to fitness and smart home of the platform.
Google TV may have fitness and smart home functions in the future
Google TV director of product management and former Netflix executive Rob Caruso gave a short interview to Protocol in which he talks about the situation between Netflix and Google TV. In essence, Caruso limits himself to hoping that things will get better in the near future, hoping for improvements and innovations from Netflix and the other Google TV partners.
I hope that in the coming months we will see some welcome improvements and innovations not only with Netflix but with many partners. You can’t force anyone’s hand, but the hope is that while we deliver functionality to our users [and] partners, everyone sees the value.
Also in the course of the interview, Caruso anticipated how Google is exploring better ways with which the platform can integrate with the smart home, to date, in fact, Google TV can only use its voice assistant for home controls. He also reports how “fitness is another great area of exploration, a move evidently aimed at countering the recent implementations of Apple Fitness + on Apple TV by the Cupertino giant.
Finally, Caruso underlines how Google is actively working to expand the offer of free content on its Google TV platform, which just recently benefited from the multimedia catalog ofPluto TV. Although there are no certain dates for any of the aforementioned news, the executive said they could be made available “at some point by the end of the year”.
