The year 2022 did not start well for Google users with smart home products: Due to the Sonos judgment, Google has to limit the range of functions of the smart speakers and Chromecast and Google TV users should soon feel the effects. But this not only affects the volume control but in many cases also the setup of the devices, for which a temporary app is now required.
Because Google has to temporarily (perhaps permanently) reduce the range of functions of some smart home products due to the Sonos ruling, a quick solution had to be found for some important steps – such as setting up new Google Nest devices.
In some cases, not all, adding a new device requires downloading the Device Utility app. Should this be necessary, the Google Home app will guide you through the necessary steps. Simply follow the few steps and the app can be uninstalled again.
This is not really comfortable, so it is no wonder that the app currently has a rating of just 1.4 stars in the Google Play Store. Could be problematic, because some users will certainly be skeptical if they are suddenly asked to install an app that looks bad at first glance.
The vast majority of users have certainly not heard of the Sonos verdict, so they are unlikely to understand this outsourcing either.
