Sony is currently working on a new VR headset for the PlayStation 5, which will bring some innovations. The step was confirmed at the beginning of 2021 and the VR controller was even shown, but now it’s about the details.
One hears from China that the production of the new VR headset will start soon at Goertek and that an announcement will be made very soon. Goertek is a large manufacturer of VR products and also works with Facebook (Oculus) and Co. on headsets, and the upcoming headset from Apple is also to be developed there.
Last year Sony only confirmed that the headset would not come in 2021, but nothing more was said. In the summer, however, there was talk of targeting the end of 2022 (Christmas business) and that would fit this message very well.
Goertek, Chinese manufacturer, will be in charge of mass producing Meta Cambria and PS VR 2 (soon!)
Goertek sold off Pico to Bytedance earlier this year, but signed a deal to continue producing Pico headsets
Also expected to supply components for Apple AR/VR HMD

Allegedly, several AAA VR games are planned for the PlayStation 5 and Sony is therefore assuming 1 to 2 million units of the VR headset (still 2022). Sounds like a great and exciting year for virtual reality and I’m curious to see if Microsoft will change its mind about VR on the Xbox again.
