Sony’s tactile feedback technology used on the PS5’s DualSense wireless gamepad is one of its main selling points. Although the haptic feedback technology in DualSense is hailed as one of the major generation upgrades, this feature relies on developers to update their games to support it, but this new Sony patent provides a new possibility to solve this problem.
According to Gameranx, the new patent was applied for by Sony Interactive Entertainment and has been approved. The patent is titled Haptics Metadata In A Spectating Stream, which describes a method for generating tactile information and sending it to the player’s DualSense without requiring the developer to manually update the game.
The tactile data generated by the program will enable advanced DualSense tactile feedback on PS4 games that have not yet been updated for PS5 and those independent games that have less support than 3A games. It is not clear when this patent will be applied to PS5, or whether it will be realized because companies often apply for patents for technology without specific plans.
However, considering the particularity of the patent and the selling point of DualSense’s tactile feedback for the PS5, it would be a good idea for Sony to put it into use.
