According to the latest reports, up to the iPhone 12 series mobile phones, Apple users can turn on or off the phone’s noise cancellation feature through the accessibility settings. For an unknown reason, this feature has never been open to iPhone 13 series users. They have been waiting for several months, hoping that Apple can solve this problem.
A few days ago, a Reddit user posted complaining that the iPhone 13 lacks a front microphone for noise reduction. This setting can be found in Accessibility -> Audio/Visual. Although the user’s statement about the lack of functionality is correct, their claim that the iPhone 13 has fewer microphones than the iPhone 12 is not accurate.
Other Reddit users correctly pointed out that this is not a hardware issue and pointed to the discussion on the Apple forum in October. User rpwils2 wrote:
I can’t find the toggle switch to turn off the [Noise] cancellation function on the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Has this been moved or deleted? When I use FaceTime and talk through the speaker, my voice will be cut off.
Then, an Apple community expert pointed out an article to help users adjust the audio settings on the iPhone.
You can adjust the mono audio and stereo left and right channel balance to meet your hearing needs. You can also turn on noise reduction to reduce environmental background noise in the phone. The problem is that iPhone 13 users cannot find this specific feature. Phone Noise Reduction: Turn on to reduce the ambient background noise in the phone when you put the handset to your ear.
Another user dagocarlito posted that Apple is aware of this problem:
iPhone 13 never this option in iOS 15 because this is a malfunction. I have been discussing this issue with Apple’s support department. This is a known issue and they are working to resolve it. There is currently no resolution timeline. This issue also caused the echo problem on CarPlay during calls between iPhone 13. This is a major flaw that needs to be resolved as soon as possible.
The problem is that this discussion dates back to October 29th, which was almost two months ago. We informed that Apple recently released iOS 15.2, but it did not solve this problem. Even in the beta version of iOS 15.3, this problem still exists.
As you can see in the picture above, on the left is the iPhone XS with this function, and on the right is the iPhone 13 Pro without phone noise reduction. As of now, the only available solution is to activate the voice isolation function during the call in the control center.
