According to the South Korean website The Elec, next year’s iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will use perforated LPTO OLED display panels provided by Samsung and LG. Rumors that the 2022 iPhone model will not have bangs began in March this year when Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that they would adopt a punch-hole design, which has been used for several years on Android devices.
The perforated design is an incision that places the front camera in the center to provide a larger display area instead of bangs. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that at least the Pro iPhone models will adopt a perforated design. If the benefits are good, all iPhone models in 2022 may adopt the same non-bangs design.
There have been recent rumors that non-professional iPhone 14 models (with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch sizes) will continue to use Liu Haiping, while Apple will limit the punch-hole design to more expensive iPhones. According to reports, there will be no “iPhone 14 mini” in the future, and this year’s small device iteration is the last time.
According to The Elec’s latest report, Samsung, the dominant supplier of Apple’s iPhone OLED panels, will provide all perforated panels for the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro, and will share an order for the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max with LG Display for the first time.
In this year’s iPhone 13 series, Samsung provided the perforated LPTO TFT OLED panels used in the two Pro models, but LG Display did not win any panel orders for the iPhone 13, even though it participated in the development of the panel together with Apple.
Therefore, winning some orders for the iPhone 14 Pro Max is a big encouragement for LG. As a major display manufacturer, it has been trying to gain a place in Apple’s iPhone supply chain. At the same time, it helps Apple reduce its dependence on Samsung and gain bargaining chips in price negotiations.
Since there are no bangs, Apple will implement a different solution for Face ID, and there are rumors that it may be placed under the display.
