The display core support for MediaTek MT8192 SoC is expected to appear in the upcoming Linux 5.17 SoC. Mediatek Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) driver changes were submitted to DRM-Next this week, and the Linux 5.17 upgrade cycle will start in January.
The most notable thing about this round of MediaTek’s DRM driver update is the enabling of the MT8192 SoC. Only about 500 lines of new code allow the next version of the Linux kernel to gain display support. MT8192 is also known as MediaTek Kompanio 820 and can be easily found in Chromebooks of various manufacturers and models.
The MediaTek Kompanio 820 is composed of four Cortex-A76 cores and four Cortex-A55 cores. It also has an Arm Mali-G57 graphics core, but MediaTek’s DRM driver currently only completes the basic display support for the SoC rather than the GPU itself.
The SoC was announced at the end of 2020 and has been found in some Chromebooks since earlier this year. The complete list of MediaTek DRM driver patches for Linux 5.17 can be found through this pull request.
