Battlefield 2042 has been controversial since its release. It is currently one of the worst-rated games in Steam history. It has been slammed by users on Metacritic and has aroused the outrage of fans of the series on social media. Now, we have the first sales data for the game since its launch last week. Although there is still a lack of digital sales, the situation in Battlefield 2042 looks pretty bleak.
In the UK, the sales of Battlefield 2042 dropped by 59% compared to the previous game Battlefield 5. Considering that the starting sales of Battlefield 5 are not very good, this is an impressive drop. The game was also criticized for its early release time and too many bugs when it was released. Compared with 2016’s Battlefield 1, Battlefield 5’s initial sales dropped by 63%. Battlefield 2042 dropped 59% from the already low benchmark set in Battlefield 5, which is worrying news for the game series.

The currently published sales data only include physical sales. The digital version is becoming more and more important for game sales. Therefore, when the sales of the digital version are also released, the numbers for Battlefield 2042 should be better. However, Call of Duty: Vanguard physical sales in the UK have declined, and digital sales are expected to make up for the difference. Pioneer physical sales fell by 23%. For the latest Call of Duty games, digital sales have not become a desirable feature but have made the situation worse. Taking digital sales into account, the game has dropped by 40% compared to the previous year.
EA will hope that digital sales can save Battlefield 2042, but if there is any progress in Call of Duty: Vanguard, it is far from certain. In fact, the overall situation of Battlefield 2042 may get worse.
