According to a public document submitted by Tesla to a Texas government agency, the company plans to invest more than $1 billion in a new car plant in Austin, Texas, and complete the construction before the end of this year. Tesla submitted this document to the Texas Licensing and Regulatory Agency last Friday, outlining Tesla’s expenditures on various manufacturing capabilities at the Austin plant.
Tesla said it plans to complete the assembly, painting, casting, stamping and construction of the car body facilities before December 31. The total area of these five facilities is close to 4.3 million square feet (about 0.4 square kilometers), and the total cost is $1.06 billion.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously stated that the company plans to start limited production of Model Y mid-size SUVs this year and mass production next year.
