Android 12 has been very successful among fans of the green robot and one of the most impactful and impressive features from a technical point of view is the dynamic themes that are based on the colors of the smartphone background. The system that takes care of this “magic” is called Monet, which is based in turn on the Material Components libraries and which at the moment is exclusive to Pixels even if this is about to change given the latest findings in its code.
A new string of code in bookstores Material Components of Google on “Add to the list of manufacturers that support dynamic colors” reveals that many smartphone manufacturers will support this feature. At the moment the list includes several brands including Oppo, Realme, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola, Vivo, HDM Global (OEM that produces Nokia smartphones), Sharp, Sony, TCL, Lenovo and Google itself.

Big G had confirmed that Android 12 dynamic themes would become open-source in the future and this event could coincide with the launch of Android 12L. This feature, however, may not be identical to Monet as smartphone manufacturers (as already done by Oppo on the ColorOS 12 betas ) may decide to use color selection algorithms other than Google’s. In addition, the fact that only the names of the various manufacturers are found in the code string instead of the Android APIs could mean that apps may not support dynamic colors until they update the Material Components libraries in their code.
Any careful eye will have noticed that perhaps the most important is missing from this list of names, namely Samsung. Although the South Korean manufacturer has already shown dynamic themes based on background colors in the beta of One UI 4, at the moment there is nothing to suggest that Samsung’s skin can also adopt the Material Components libraries, precluding its use at third party apps. However, it is still possible that this string will be updated before the libraries are ready.
