Microsoft Edge browser on macOS is getting a new Super Duper Secure Mode (super secure mode), which has been available on the Windows version since the beginning of August. This experimental feature is currently online in Edge Canary 94.0.992.0 + or later, although the hidden experimental Flag needs to be turned on.
Microsoft said that the super safe mode in the Microsoft Edge browser brings security enhancements without significant performance degradation. This experimental feature makes it more difficult for attackers to exploit vulnerabilities in the browser by turning off the just-in-time compiler (JIT), the most commonly attacked component of Edge’s V8 JavaScript engine.
This reduction in the attack surface has the potential to greatly improve user security; it will eliminate about half of the V8 vulnerabilities that must be fixed, the Microsoft Edge vulnerability research team explained on GitHub.
Microsoft emphasized that on some popular websites, including Facebook and YouTube, all Edge internal testers will disable this feature by default. However, Microsoft plans to provide users with control in an upcoming update to let them know which websites can take advantage of Edge’s super safe mode.
This new security feature is still under development, and it needs to go through various internal testing channels before it can be widely used on macOS. In the meantime, you can test the Super Safe Mode on the Edge Canary branch at any time.
