As early as March 2020, Microsoft announced the private preview version of its cloud-based printing solution Universal Print. It essentially moves the Windows Server printing function to the cloud. As long as the user has a printer that supports Universal Print, there is no need to worry about other infrastructure or even printer driver updates.
A few months ago, the service was officially available to Microsoft 365 customers. Now, Microsoft announced that Universal Print will be integrated with OneDrive soon. users can print documents directly from OneDrive without downloading or requiring IT administrators to install printer drivers on devices managed by their organization.
Users only need to click Print after selecting the document and select a printer with the Universal Print function to print. If users prefer to use a local printer, they can also choose a different configuration accordingly.
Microsoft said the feature will be rolled out to enterprises this week. The printing experience is universal in all devices and browsers, and currently supported file types are PDF, XPS, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
