Although the third quarter has just begun, Tesla’s Model Y long-life version in the third quarter of 2021 in the United States and Canada has been announced to be sold out. According to Tesla’s official website, the Model Y long-life version is currently expected to be delivered in October 2021, which is the first month of the fourth quarter.
The estimated delivery date in the fourth quarter of 2021 currently only applies to the Model Y long-life version, because the Model Y high-performance version clearly lists the expected delivery date as 7-11 weeks in the United States and Canada.
The Tesla Model Y long-life version is currently priced at $52,990 (not including discounts) in the United States, which makes its price closer to the Tesla Model 3, rather than the company’s flagship Model S and Model X. However, ModelY is much more spacious than its class of cars.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said that he believes that the demand for Model Y will exceed the combined demand for Model S, Model 3 and Model X. Considering that Model 3 is already the world’s best-selling high-end electric car, this seems like a bold statement.
So far this year, the sales of electric vehicles in the United States show that Musk’s statement is accurate because Model Y has now surpassed Model 3 in the United States. As a crossover model, Model Y caters to a huge potential market, which also implies that the demand for the automotive market is growing. This puts Tesla in a unique position. If the pricing of cars depends on demand, Tesla could set the price of Model Y even higher.
However, so far, Tesla’s price adjustments have been minimal, which shows that the company is indeed looking at the long-term and hopes that the price of Model Y will only focus on the mass market.
