Google has admitted to the Indian government that the Google Assistant sometimes listens to and saves conversations even if you didn’t say Hey Google. It has also been known for some time that some conversations are listened to by Google employees.
Google Assistant Privacy Scandal
Two years ago, Google Assistant was discredited because Google employees listen to conversations of users who talk to its smart assistant. Google does this to improve the quality of the artificial intelligence (AI) behind Assistant.
In some cases, it also involved conversations that were accidentally recorded because the Assistant had misunderstood the ‘Hey Google’ hot word, the Belgian broadcaster VRT announced at the time. After an investigation of the facts, Google then gave users more control with new privacy settings for the Assistant.

Google under attack again?
Now there may be another privacy scandal just around the corner. According to IndiaToday sources, Google has openly admitted to the Indian government that it sometimes listens in on an AI helper and makes recordings when the hotword is not used. It is not clear whether Google is again referring to situations where the Assistant incorrectly recognizes the hot word, or whether the Assistant also makes recordings at other times.
Google was also criticized by India for not clearly stating in its privacy statement that the company’s employees listen to users’ conversations. Another problem, according to the Indian government, is that Google shares users’ personal information with third parties when it has users’ permission to do so.
