According to the latest report, Samsung launched the SSD (Solid State Drive) for next-generation enterprise servers based on ZNS (Zoned Namespace) technology. ZNS, as next-generation technology, can divide the entire storage space of an SSD into small-capacity areas, and store data in the same area with the same purpose and use cycle, thereby efficiently using SSDs.

Generally speaking, when the internal storage space of the SSD is not divided, the generated data is temporarily stored by multiple software, so garbage collection is required, and additional read/write operations are performed to effectively manage the storage capacity.

On the contrary, since ZNS SSD stores data in sequence, no other read/write operations caused by garbage collection will occur, so the service life of existing SSDs affected by the number of writes can be increased by up to 3~ 4 times.

The ZNS SSD PM1731a launched by Samsung is a product based on the sixth generation of V-NAND (technology) with a size of 2.5 inches and a capacity of 4TB and 2TB. In addition to the ZNS feature, it also supports dual ports, which means that even if an error occurs on one of the ports during use, the other optimized port can be used to run the storage server stably.

Samsung said that due to the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), big data and the Internet of Things (IoT), ZNS SSD is expected to be a more effective solution for managing explosive growth data and attract attention.
