In an official blog post published earlier this week, Google announced that a new Save to Photos button will be introduced in Gmail, allowing users to save photo attachments in emails directly to the Google Photos application. This feature was launched on Wednesday, May 26, Japan. Users with Gmail personal accounts and users with Google Workspace, G Suite Basic and G Suite Business should be able to see this feature in the next 15 days.
As Google explained in the blog post, the significance of this feature is that users no longer need to download the image attachment first and then upload it to the Google Photos application. Users only need to click the “Save to Photos” button to achieve this operation.
Google said that this feature will be turned on by default, so if you are a Gmail user, you should see the “Save to Photos” button in the next few days (if it has not been activated on your account). When you hover your mouse over a picture, you should see this button near the bottom of the picture, right next to the “Save to local” button. When you preview a picture in full screen, you can also find the “Save to Photos” option in the three vertical dot menus in the upper right corner of the page.

The only thing to note is that this feature is currently only available for JPEG images. If you receive a PNG, GIF, or TIFF, you will have to go the old-fashioned route and download the file to your computer before you can do anything with it.
So, whether your job requires you to send and receive photos all the time, or you are just tired of having to download every photo your parents emailed to you, this new feature should be useful to anyone with a Google account.
It’s also worth noting that from June 1, 2021, any new photos uploaded to the Google Photos service will be counted into the 15GB of free storage space for each Google account. In other words, from now until next Tuesday, the photos you backed up to Google Photos using the “Save to Photos” button will not count towards your storage limit.
