According to user reports and actual measurements by some sources, Microsoft Defender has generated thousands of files in the Windows 10 system. This problem has been widely reported by users, and it is confirmed that this problem is caused by the recent update of Defender.
Microsoft Defender is pre-installed in all versions of Windows 10 and is regularly updated through Windows Update. After updating Microsoft Defender in the last week of April, users noticed that Windows had started generating thousands of files on the system drive (the location where the operating system was installed).
Affected users reported on Microsoft forums and Reddit that their Microsoft Defender history folder (C:\Progr AMD ata\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Scans\History\Store) quietly archived some files. The files themselves are tiny and harmless, but in some cases, they consume a lot of storage space.
However, this error also caused the installation of the Windows Server. Some users reported that the update resulted in 18 million files being generated. The IT administrator said: “So far, we have 3 servers affected in 2016.

Our hard disk space started to raise alarms last night. One server has 18 million files in the Store folder, and the other has 1,300 Ten thousand. It took a few hours to find all the files in order to delete them. Due to the allocated size, these files took up 50-60GB of space on the disk.”
The easiest way to check whether Microsoft Defender is plagued by this error is through the file manager.
- Open File Explorer and make sure that “Hidden Items” is allowed on the “View” tab.
- In the address bar, enter “C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\” without the quotation marks.
- Click “Windows Defender”.
- If the folder requires administrator rights, click “Continue”.
- In the Windows Defender folder, navigate to Scans/History/Scans.
