According to the reports, electric car manufacturer Tesla has obtained a license from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to use millimeter-wave radar sensors in the 57-64GHz frequency band in its cars. This permission allows the company to install more powerful sensors to monitor the conditions of people in the car, the interior of the car, and the environment when suspicious activity occurs. In other words, the company plans to use these sensors to help monitor drivers and ensure that they stay alert.
Tesla requested the Federal Communications Commission to approve a short-range motion sensor at the end of July 2020, which is a millimeter-wave sensor. When this technology is applied to Tesla, this sensor can sense the movements of passengers in the car. In particular, such sensors can not only prevent children from being left in a hot car but also will strengthen the company’s anti-theft system, providing vehicle safety advantages, such as broken windows or vehicle intrusion detection and the like.

In addition, Tesla also designed a safer airbag deployment system by installing sensors on the seats. The sensors in these airbags can outline the shape of the passengers in the seat and try to calculate their height and weight. This millimeter-wave sensor is likely to become an indispensable part of Tesla’s autopilot system.
