The rear camera array of the Samsung Galaxy S22 is unlikely to have a time-of-flight (ToF) sensor. The ToF sensor calculates the time it takes for the reflected beam to bounce to the sensor, which is helpful for 3D mapping and facial recognition in portrait mode.
Galaxy S10 5G, Note 10+ and last year’s S20 series all have this technology, but it was cancelled in the Note 20 and Galaxy S21 series, and now it seems that it will not return in the Galaxy S22. According to the report, people familiar with the matter said that consumers did not respond badly to the camera array without the ToF unit, so the company decided not to equip the Galaxy S22 with this sensor.
Samsung seems to think that its flagship phone does not need a ToF unit because it does not currently play a meaningful role. When augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications mature, the sensor may return. According to a report last year, Samsung first brought ToF technology to mobile phones to keep up with Apple and Huawei. Its technology is not as fast and accurate as Apple’s LiDAR depth sensor, which is manufactured by Sony specifically for Apple.

This is not to say that Samsung has given up ToF sensors. In November last year, the company launched an ISOCELL Vizion 33D ToF sensor. It has a demodulation system with 4 contacts that can accurately measure the depth of fast-moving objects. Samsung also said that it can accurately map the user’s face in a dim environment. It is said that at present, the company plans to sell it to Chinese smartphone manufacturers.
In addition to not being equipped with a ToF camera, there are very few revelations about the Galaxy S22 series, and the new machine may be unveiled in the first quarter of 2022. This series may use AMD-based Exynos processors. Samsung also recently reached a cooperation with the Japanese camera company Olympus. It remains to be seen whether the S22 will have an Olympus-branded camera array.
