The biggest weakness of Surface Pro has always been its support stability, that is, its ability to stabilize on narrow and uneven surfaces, such as human knees or airplane seatback tables. As a tablet with a keyboard, it is too big to stand up on certain occasions. Microsoft recently published a patent designed to solve this problem, of course, it uses more magnets to achieve this progress.
The patent documents suggest that the detachable Surface keyboard should be folded under the Surface Pro as a large and hard base, which can provide a completely flat surface for the tripod. But one problem is that the flexible hinge of the Surface keyboard still allows people to have a lot of displacement when they touch the screen.

Microsoft’s solution is to add more magnets to the hinge connector (105 above and 116 below). These magnets will be connected to the opposite pole magnet on the back of the Surface keyboard or a soft metal board, which will be the Surface keyboard. The flexible hinge adds some rigidity.
Microsoft pointed out that the existing magnets in the Surface connector can also be exposed so that they can be connected to the back of the Surface Pro and Surface keyboard at the same time to perform the same duties. This patent was filed on February 5, 2020, and published on April 1, 2021. Given that it doesn’t sound complicated, we hope to see it find some practical applications in the future.
