Facebook confirms to test Venmo-like QR codes in the US

Facebook confirmed that it is testing a new QR code function and payment link to be used with Facebook Pay to make it easier for US users to send or request remittances to each other. This QR code function is similar to Venmo’s QR code and other features.

It will allow users to scan a friend’s code with a smartphone’s camera to send or request remittances, and a shareable payment link will allow you to publish outside of Facebook itself Your payment address. MacRumors first discovered this new feature on Monday. The website pointed out that a new “Scan” button appeared in the Facebook Pay dial at the top of the screen.

When you click this button, you will enter an experience where you can scan the other party’s code. The screen that displays the QR code also introduces a personalized payment URL in the format “https://m.me/pay/UserName”. When you are making a payment or sending a request, you can also send this URL to others.

A Facebook spokesperson confirmed the launch of the feature but characterized it as a “test” currently being conducted in the United States. The spokesperson said that in order to make payments on Messenger more convenient, Facebook has begun testing people’s ability to use QR codes and payment links when they want to send or request remittances. The spokesperson also pointed out that currently, only US users can send payments through Messenger.

Users who want to send and receive money in Messenger must be at least 18 years old and must have a Visa or Mastercard debit card, a PayPal account, or a supported prepaid card to use the payment function. They also need to set their preferred currency to USD in the app.

Facebook first launched the Facebook Pay service in November 2019 to establish a single payment system that can be extended to the company’s various applications. However, the current service is not necessarily an opponent of other applications such as PayPal, because Facebook currently cooperates with PayPal and is one of the supported payment methods.

At present, Facebook Pay provides a payment experience for many areas of Facebook, these areas mainly focus on business, donation and tipping, such as Facebook Marketplace, Facebook Shop, Buy on Instagram, and other activities, such as buying Stars to support game creators, Buy on-site event tickets, donate to the cause and more Users can also send money to friends on Messenger via the built-in button.

Currently, this payment experience is separate from Facebook’s Novi cryptocurrency wallet, but it is conceivable that the two will become more integrated over time. Facebook declined to disclose more details about the test, including how many or what percentage of users will see the new QR code and link, or when the test will start and when it will end.
