Apple: How to measure performance without tracking users

Starting with iOS 14.5, iPadOS 14.5 and tvOS 14.5, Apple will require apps to obtain user permission to track user activities and achieve targeted advertising as part of a privacy measure called “App Tracking Transparency”.

To help advertisers adapt to this change, Apple today shared a new version of the “A Day in the Life of your Data” document, which details two privacy-protected advertising measurement techniques.

Apple said that SKAdNetwork can let advertisers know how many times an app’s ad has been installed after being seen, without sharing any user or device data. Similarly, Private Click Measurement also allows advertisers to measure the impact of ads that lead users to the site while using processing methods on the device to minimize the amount of data collected.

Starting from iOS 14.5 and iPad OS 14.5, apps can use private tap measurement. “A Day in the Life of your Data” is also updated with new information, detailing how advertisers bid in auctions to display their ads on users’ devices, and how advertisers can use ad attribution to optimize their ads activity.

Apple reiterated that iOS 14.5, iPadOS 14.5 and tvOS 14.5 will be released in early spring, but did not outline a specific timetable. In a recent interview, Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that these updates will be released “in a few weeks.”
