Apple introduced a privacy security feature in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 updates last year to inform users which App is using camera or microphone permissions. Starting from Android 10, Google is also working hard to improve the privacy experience of its own mobile operating system.
And in the recent Android 12 developer preview version, we have seen the latest changes to imitate iOS 14. According to the screenshot shared by @kdrag0n on Twitter, Android will tell which App has permission to call the camera or microphone so that the user can determine whether it is being monitored by a specific App.
Similar to the experience on the iPhone, the system will light up an orange or green indicator light in the upper left corner of the screen when an app calls the microphone or camera. This ingenious visual aid design can help users spot misbehaving apps at a glance and cut off their camera or microphone permissions in time. However, if you have obtained the official authorization, you can safely ignore the relevant notice.

@kdrag0n added that this feature in the Android 12 developer preview version is more complete than in the Android 11 period. If an orange dot is displayed in the upper left corner of the screen, it means that the app is using the microphone. If it shows a green dot, it means that the app is accessing the camera.
Android 12 DP2 has a new privacy indicator UI, as seen in the mockups that leaked in early February. It’s much more polished than the hidden implementation in Android 11 and it matches the mockups surprisingly well. pic.twitter.com/hIaKFEpgsb

Tap the notification to pop up an actual window, which details which application is calling the camera or microphone so that the user can take further measures (such as removing related permissions). It is expected that later this spring, Google will launch the first public beta version of Android 12, and will decide whether to officially incorporate this feature into the Android 12 release at the end of the summer.
This is what it looks like with location, camera, and microphone all active at the same time. Unfortunately, location doesn’t show up in the app usage details (yet). pic.twitter.com/GyzqEf1mNr
