Microsoft has quickly discontinued the optional cumulative update (KB5001649) for Windows 10 after multiple users reported problems applying the patch. KB5001649 is designed to solve the remaining printing problems in Windows 10 version 20H2/2004. The 2004/20H2 version of KB5001649 (Build 19042.870) was released to replace the last hot patch KB5001567 and can alleviate two problems, including blue screen when printing and unexpected results when printing.
However, many users told us that the installation of the second emergency update could not actually be completed. When you click the “Download and Install” button, the Windows 10 update designed to fix the printing problem will fail with a mysterious error message, as shown in the figure below.
It is worth noting that the traditional method of repairing Windows Update fails, and the “Windows Update Troubleshooter” option in the settings application does not work. According to tests conducted on multiple devices and virtual machines with different configurations, Microsoft seems to have removed the update (Build 19042.870) and replaced it with the last hotfix KB5001567 (19042.868), and it seems that it still works normally.

Some users also confirmed that the patch is no longer available through Windows Update, but you can still download it from the Microsoft Update Catalog. At the same time, it is possible that Microsoft is using device learning to control the rollout of problem patches, which means that only some users have seen it.
Microsoft has confirmed that it uses AI/ML to improve the quality and reliability of update launches. If its system detects a failure/installation problem, the Windows 10 update or driver update will be suspended from the Windows update database.
It is unclear when the update will be re-released. However, if your device really needs this patch, you can go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website, enter the KB number (KB5001649) in the search box, and then click the download button. Microsoft has not yet acknowledged the latest issue.
