It was reported that Facebook is creating an Instagram suitable for users under 13 years of age. The new application began testing internally on Thursday and has not yet been launched. According to reports, Instagram’s vice president of product Vishal Shah wrote on the employee retention board: “I’m pleased to announce that in the future, we will make youth work a priority for Instagram and make it a priority. Included in our H1 priority list.”
“We will build a new youth pillar product and focus on two things: first, accelerate integrity and privacy work to ensure the safest product experience for young people; second, build a product that allows people under 13 to use The safe version of Instagram.” Shah wrote.
Nearly 10 years ago, Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion. When Facebook’s main social network assets failed to resonate with some young users, Instagram became one of its most popular products.
“More and more children are asking parents if they can join the app to keep them in touch with their friends,” Facebook spokesperson Joe Osborne (Joe Osborne) said in a statement. “There are not many choices for parents now, so we are working hard to develop other products-just like the Messenger Kids we do-products that are suitable for children and managed by parents. We are exploring the possibility of a parent-controlled product. The experience is brought to Instagram to help children keep in touch with friends, discover new hobbies and interests, etc.”

According to BuzzFeed, Instagram head Adam Mosseri (Adam Mosseri) will oversee the work, while Facebook vice president Pavni Diwanji (Pavni Diwanji) will direct the work. Before joining Facebook, Divanji worked at Google and was responsible for managing products for children, including YouTube Kids.
Currently, people under the age of 13 are not allowed to use this photo-sharing platform application. Facebook also launched Messenger Kids in 2017, specifically designed for children under 13 years of age.
Messenger Kids is a version of Facebook’s communication app for teenagers. This app contains many parental control features, but there was a flaw before, allowing some children to chat with people who have not been approved by their parents. The incident has raised concerns among regulators, who believe that the company does not adequately protect children.
Over the years, there have been many voices criticizing apps such as Instagram for harming people’s mental health. Instagram and parent company Facebook has been criticized by users, advocacy groups and legislators, claiming that they hide harmful content and promote anxiety and depression, especially among young users.
In 2017, a report published by the Royal Society for Public Health found that Instagram is the social media platform that most affects the mental health of young people. Some studies also show that social media platforms increase users’ chances of being bullied, reduce their sleep and exercise, and indirectly cause harm to users.
