Epic Games sues China’s AR glasses manufacturer Nreal

According to The Verge, game developer Epic Games sued the Chinese AR glasses manufacturer Nreal for infringement of the trademark of its virtual engine Unreal. Epic claimed in a lawsuit filed last weekend that the spelling and pronunciation of Nreal’s name are almost exactly the same as its own virtual engine Unreal and that this is not a coincidence.

Nreal was established in Beijing in 2017 and is a technology company dedicated to the development, production and sales of AR/MR products. In 2020, Nreal and overseas head operators such as South Korea’s LGU+ and Japan’s KDDI have successively released the flagship product Nreal Light for the Korean and Japanese markets.

The latest data shows that Korean users use Nreal Light for nearly 1 hour a day on average, while heavy users (the top 20%) use Nreal Light for more than 2 hours. This means that MR glasses represented by Nreal light can replace other devices in entertainment scenarios such as movie watching and games, and have the potential to become a new generation of mobile terminals favored by consumers.

In March of this year, Nreal announced that it has joined hands with the world-renowned operator Vodafone to officially land in the European market and is the first to sell Nreal Light in Germany. This is the first consumer-grade MR glasses in the European market. Nreal also announced plans to go public in the United States later this year.
